LG launches app store, initial focus on Asia

Posted by mohan desai on જુલાઇ 13, 2009

LG Electronics Inc, the world’s No. 3 handset maker, is launching an online store for mobile phone applications Tuesday with an initial focus on Asia and aspirations for a more global reach by year-end.
Phone makers and mobile firms worldwide are in a race to match the success of Apple’s App Store, creating their own virtual stores where users can download software and content.
Improving software is key for South Korean mobile phone makers Samsung and LG, which have grown on well-priced handsets but are lagging in the fast-growing smartphowne category.
LG, which trails Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in mobile phones, said in a statement on Monday that the “LG Application Store” would provide 1,400 applications including 100 free programs, available in 15 languages.
The service will first be offered in Asia-Pacific countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia and will reach Europe and the South America by the end of this year, with the number of applications to be offered to increase to more than 2,000 by then, LG said.
LG has not set any firm plan to launch the marketplace in the United States, the stronghold of Apple’s iPhone and Research In Motion’s Blackberry.
Shares in LG Electronics fell 1.6 percent by 0204 GMT, compared with the wider market’s 2 percent loss.

Reliance to Bring Mobile Novel to India

Posted by mohan desai on જુલાઇ 13, 2009

Reliance Communications will next month launch a mobile phone-based novel, Deaf Heaven, authored by award-winning writer Pinki Virani. The book will be packed in a set of 90 SMS messages priced at Rs 30 and made available through an specially-created SMS subscription pack.

“Subscribers will receive the entire novel over a series of SMSes spaced over a period of 30 days. Every day, the subscriber will get to read the novel through three SMSes,” said Krishna Durbha, head, Reliance Communications.

Reliance also plans to convert the book into an adult audio mobile book. The audio book would be available on a multimodal number which was under development, said Durbha. “The adult audio mobile book will be offered at a flat subscription price of Rs 30. Users will be charged Re 1 per minute to hear the audio book.”

The audio book, which will be made available in English, constitutes almost 60 minutes of audio content. The digital rights of the literary content will be owned by the author. RCom refused to share the details of the revenue-share arrangement.

Value-added services, or VAS, which on an average comprise up to 7 per cent of the total telecom revenue for Indian operators, is a growing segment. Operators dominate the revenue sharing arrangement in India. Of the amount paid by the users, 70 per cent is kept by the operator, the aggregator gets 25 per cent while the content owner gets the rest.

The handset-based novel is part of RCom’s strategy to further drive its VAS revenues in the metros and Section A and B cities. It says it is targetting 20 per cent revenue from VAS and data services. The company is gearing to launch F1 Racing live on its portal, R-World, and is reportedly in talks with publishers and authors to further VAS based on literary content.

“We want to grow the VAS market beyond Bollywood and are looking to launch poetic works like shayari through audio books,” said Durbha.

RCom had earlier announced its intention to overhaul its pricing model to offer services such as caller tunes, news alerts and internet surfing for as low as Re 1 a day.

Posted by mohan desai on જૂન 24, 2009

Indian government has banned the import of mobile phones without IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. IMEI number is used to uniquely identify a mobile device. It corresponds to SSN or PAN number used to identify people. This move will majorly impact Chinese and Taiwanese companies whose phones flooded Indian market. The penetration of such mobile phones can be judged from the fact that there are more than 25 million phones present in India without an IMEI number.

It can be helpful in various life saving operations. With the help of IMEI number operators can pin point a mobile device with in one km of radius. Many cases of missing people and kidnaps have been solved with the help of mobile phones.
If you already posses a mobile without an IMEI number you can get an IMEI number assigned from around 1600 outlets that Cellular Operators Association of India is opening in tie up with Mobile Standard Alliance of India. The users who don’t have IMEI number assigned to mobile phones will be denied service by operators from June 30.
